MED approved products
The luxury liner Oasis oft he Seas was completed in October 2009 at the STX Europe shipyard in Turku.Commissioned by the Royal Caribbean Cruise Line, this ceuise ship ist the largest passenger vessel ever built.Its width is 47 metres,and there are 2,700 cabins.
Counting passenger s and crew,the ship accommodates over 8,000 persons.Considerable attention was already being paid tot he passenger ship´s surface treatments in the design and construction stages; the paint products used fort he cruse ship´s indoor furnishings and other surfaces requires MED (Marine Equipment Directive) approwal.
MED –approwed surfacing materials are flame-retardant,and do not release toxic smoke or combustion gases.
The designers and architects oft he Oasis oft he Seas have selected Tikkuila´s high-quality MED-apprved products for vari ous parts oft he vessel.Tikkurila´s range of MED products is extensive,and paints and coatings for many kins of surfaces and functional purposes are available.The spreading method can be brushing,rolling or spraying.Solventborne and waterborne metal and wood indusries´ products,as well as decorative paints,have been used.The broad product range enhances the colour ambiences and special effects desired by the client for various locatinons on the ship.
The client´ s architects,product designers and numerous product manufacturers utilised Tikkurila´ color samples and product brochures when seleting the colors and products fort he vessel´s cosy and glam orous world of color.Infomation about Tikkurila´s MED approved products has been assembled on a separate website,where positive feedback has been re oei ved from numerous design offices,product manfacturers and retail dealers.Product information and currently valid oertifi cations have been easily and quickly available.

MED-approved products can be identified by the helm logo on the packaging.Tikkurila´s MED products are also audited by the rating institution DNV (Norske Veritas).
This ensures that the products manufacturing and Tikkurila´s quality systems comply with the requirements ( D-module,Certtificate No. MED-D -1165) set fort he manufactue of Marine Equipment Directiveapproved products.
Certain products also comply with the Finnish emissions class M1 requirements for construction materials. M1 means that products with this classification release minimum amounts of volatile air.
Therefore these products are very suitable for premises,where especially good indoor air is required.
The following Tikkurila´s products have MED (Marine Equipment Directive) certificate and are thus accepted to be used for interior painting of walls and ceilings in ships.
This certificate No MED-D-1165 certifies that manufacturer Tikkurila Oyj operates an approved Quality System Approval according to Marine Equipment Directive 96/98/EC, amendment 2002/75/EC for surface materials with low flame-spread characteristics, production-quality assurance (module D).
Tikkurila products that meet the requirements on materials with low flame-spread characteristics and not producing excessive quantities of smoke and toxic products or not giving rise to toxic hazards at elevated temperatures and the provisions of Marine Equipment Directive (96/98/EC, amendments 98/85/EC, 2001/53/EC and 2002/75/EC) that apply to surface materials with low flame-spread characteristics.
